Camp
Notes 9/16/07 By Mike
Lee
- Roenick actually looks like he knows what he's doing out
there. The guy can stick handle! There were two or three instances when he
absolutley undressed the defender he was skating against.
-
Defenseman
Rob Davison and Doug Murray seem to be lost onthe ice.
Marleau
really
has some jump in his step. The whole team honestly looks a step ahead of
where
they were at the start of camp last year. Several players have been
skating
for weeks and the difference is noticeable. Everyone appears to be in
great
shape.
- Steve Bernier looks as if he trimmed down a bit.
-
The scrimmages have been full contact, full intensity and very exciting.
Stands were packed again today. Devin Setoguchi has not practiced Saturday
or
Sunday. He may be hurt again.
- Saw Doug Wilson taking notes today.
- A staffer mentioned that the logo is in place for a minimum of 3
years, like it or not.

Camp
Notes 9/14/07 By Mike
Lee
- Entire TV and radio broadcast team was there along with plenty
of press
for MEdia Day on Friday. The Sharke provided lunch and access to the coaching
staff and roster as regular camp practices begin.
- Plenty of fans in attendance to checkout the first open practice of camp. The
stands were full.
- Jonathan Cheechoo was wearing a visor
during full contact scrimmages. Rob
Davison looked liked he could have spent some time working on his skating over
teh summer. Jeremy Roenick made his first appearance in teal.
- Joe Thorton wasn't in regular mode as he practiced without his teeth!
- New special assistant Mike Ricci was in attendance, in his usual flip
flops and shorts. Said he was glad to be
home.
-
Marc Edouard Vlasic looks as if he's filled out a bit
- New defenseman Alexander
Semenov is a big boy that can skate. He's an intriguing addition to this
roster. If he can skate and move the puck, it may give the Sharks that
extra
something that was missing last year on the blueline.

Left
Wing -- Locks: Milan Michalek,
Ryane
Clowe, Patrick
Rissmiller Bubble: Lukas
Kaspar, Farmhand: Jamie
McGinn, Dennis Packard Unsigned:
None Skinny: A year after a massive
overhaul of the position, the Sharks actually have
some stability at left wing. Milan Michalek signed the
longest contract in team history during the off
season, locking up the deal after a breakout season in
06-07. Ryane Clowe turned out to be one of the biggest
surprises of the season, turning in a solid 34 point
season (16G, 18 A). Patrick Rissmiller was another
surprise after making the team with a solid training
camp last Fall. San Jose invited John Packard to a
tryout contract after playing in 68 games for
Providence (AHL) last season. |
 |
 |
 |
Center
-- Locks:Patrick Marleau, Joe
Thornton,
Curtis Brown Bubble:
Joe Pavelski, Marcel
Goc, Jeremy Roenick Farmhand:Tomas
Plihal, Craig
Valette, Tom
Cavanagh Unsigned: Mark
Smith Skinny: The Sharks
locked up their two premier centers in Thornton
and Marleau to contracts that will keep both in San
Jose for another three seasons. With no contract
distractions, the team leaders can focus on winning
hockey games. Jeremy Roenick's signing is odd,
considering the log jam at the position. Curtis Brown
served as the lock down penalty killer the Sharks
lacked in 06-07, and Marcel Goc showed improvement on
the defensive end of the rink. Joe Pavelski was a
pleasant surprise last season, but could be looking
from the outside in if Roenick turns out to be a force
in camp. One option is to move Marleau, Goc, or
Pavelski to one of the wings. Roenick' signing
essentially ends the Mark Smith era in San
Jose. |
 |
 |
 |
Right
Wing -- Locks: Jonathan Cheechoo,
Steve Bernier, Mike Grier Bubble: Devin
Setoguchi, Mike
Iggulden, Graham Mink Farmhand: Riley
Armstrong,
Jonathan Tremblay Unsigned:
None Skinny: Cheechoo returns from a 37-goal
season, which was considered a let down after his
record 56-goal perfomarmance in 06-07. Look for a
solid year from Cheechoo now that the expectations of
a Rocket Richard year are behind him. Mike Grier
proved to be one of the best free agent signings the
Sharks made last season, joining Brown as a key
component on the penalty kill. His leadership, along
with guys like Thornton, Marleau, Roenick, Brown,
McLaren and Rivet chalk full of experience. A nice
luxury given the average age of the roster. Steve
Bernier will have to work even harder this year to
keep the faith of the coaching staff. His demotion to
Worcester last season was a wake up call, but the
Sharks have plenty of young talent knocking on the
door in Devon Setogushi, Mike Iggulden and Graham
Mink. |

 |
Defense
-- Locks: Kyle
McLaren, Craig Rivet, Christian Ehrhoff, Matt
Carle, Marc-Edouard
Vlasic Bubble:
Alexei Semanov, Doug Murray, Rob
Davison Farmhand: Dan
Spang, Brennan Evans, Brad Norton, Brad
Staubitz Unsigned: None Skinny:
Much like last season, the Sharks defense is one
of the big question
marks entering
the season. The trade deadline addition of Craig
Rivet settled down the blueline,
but the Sharks lost their most tenured defenseman
in Scott Hannan to free agency. KyLe McLaren is a
constant injury liability because of his rough &
tumble style of play, and Matt Carle creates a
defensive liability with his offensive minded game.
Christian Ehrhoff continues to evolve his game, but he
can also be a liability defensively. Marc-Edouard
Vlasic was the biggest surprise of the the 06-07
campaign, appearing in 81 games for San Jose last
season. Look for Vlasic to solidify the Sharks
blueline for many years to come. |
 |
 |
 |
Goaltender
-- Locks: Evgeni Nabokov,
Dimitri Patzold Bubble:
None Farmhand: Tomas Greiss, Taylor Dakers,
Tyson Sexsmith Unsigned:
none Skinny: The Sharks finally
decided on a number one goaltender after shipping Vesa
Toskala to Toronto in the off season. Evgeni Nabokov
is now firmly entrenched as the primary netminder in
San Jose, so look for him to carry the load all
season. The backup's job is Dmitri Patzold's to lose
in training camp. After enjoying a glut at the
position, the Sharks now look to re-stock their
goaltending corps, by bringing in WHL netminders
Taylor Dakers and Tyson Sexsmith to fight for the
Worcester goaltender's job with Tomas Greiss.

attending
camp, but not making the Sharks, will be
assigned to the Sharks top
