| HISTORY |
Caught the
attention of NHL scouts in 1993 with his silky smooth skating ability while
playing in the Russian junior league. The Sharks took a chance on him by
drafting him in the sixth round in 1994. He immediately showed what he is
capable of by leading Russia (Silver Medal) in scoring with 8 goals and 2
assists during the 1995 World Junior Champioships.
He made the move to
North America in 1996, playing for Manitoba of the IHL. He ranked sixth in
scoring for Manitoba, yet only played in 42 games for the Moose. He started the
1997 season in San Jose and scored his first NHL goal on opening night. He
would play 19 games for San Jose throughout the season, but had a stint with
Kentucky playing in 44 games.
Alex played in 55 games for San Jose
during the 1998-99 season and was named the team MVP after scoring 12 goals and
18 assists. He was named runner-up for NHL rookie of the month honors in
February after scoring five goals and four assists. Finished the year 8th in
scoring among rookies.
His numbers slightly improved in 1999-2000, where
he scored 14 goals and 21 assists in 57 games.

| SCOUTING
REPORT |
Alex reminds you a
lot of a young Pavel Bure with his skating style and puck handling ability. If
he learns to fool goaltenders like Bure than the Sharks have themselves a
steal. Can be dangerous in tight quarters because of his skating ability, but
he still lacks the ability to finish with consistency.
Can play with an
edge, and isn't unwiling to jump into a scrum. His size is detriment when
things get chippy, but his game is about making defensemen look foolish with
the puck, not his fists. Needs to concentrate on fundamentals.
